Mein Kampf's

As I was reading, I noticed that on pages 317-318 in "A Late Night Excerpt", Death talks about being "fought off" by Max Vandenburg when came, describing it as a struggle. This event made me think back to Mein Kampf (my struggle) and it also got me thinking back to the Prologue, during which Death had mentioned that he collects stories as an attempt to prove "that you and your human existence are worth it". As we discussed in class, Max writes his own struggle on the pages of Mein Kampf, showing that he believes his struggle is more important. Struggles seem to be a theme throughout the novel. Each character seems to have his or her own Mein Kampf. As an example, at pgs 317-318 (again), Max's struggle was what it has always been up to that point, which is to stay alive. This is also the reason that Max comes to Himmel street to stay in hiding. Liesel's struggle seemed to be to indirectly resist the Nazi regime by stealing books. Some might also argue that Max also does this, but I'm going to have to say that as far as we know, prior to coming to Himmel Street, Max didn't exactly do much resisting of the Nazi's or Hitler. Therefore, it seems Death collected Liesel's story because he saw it contained many Mein Kampf's, which he sees as a worthy human existence. I found it interesting that Death admires a struggle because Death doesn't seem to have much to struggle for, being only "a result".
