Liesel + Rudy feeding jews

I was wondering after Rudy and Liesel placed bread on the streets for the marching Jews and were getting chased, why the Nazis stopped chasing them. After running for a little bit, Rudy and Liesel stopped to catch their breath, and Liesel was listening to the soldier catch up to her. Liesel was expecting the soldier to grab her and (most likely) question and punish her, but the soldier only kicked her and told her to get lost. Did the soldier only leave her alone because she was a child, or did the soldier maybe have a bit of compassion and feel sorry for the Jews (I mean this as in maybe the soldier didn't stop her because he agreed with what she did but wanted to still do his job)?
