Liesel after the bombing
After the bombing on Himmel Street, when Liesel's family and friends have all died, Liesel says something that confused me. When she is with the LSE men coming back to Himmel Street, she says to the men that [they] have to get [her] papa and mama. [They] have to get Max out of the basement" (534). We all know very well that Max has been out of her house and in a concentration camp for quite some time. Is she trying to deny that anything bad had just happened on Himmel Street (both Max leaving and the bombing)? Is it just to painful for her to realize what has happened so she is trying to convince herself that everything is perfect (or as perfect as it was when Max, Rosa, and Hans were all with her)?

It seems to me that Liesel is shocked and confused about what has just happened, so she attempts to take comfort in memories of a time when she was surrounded by the people she loved, and, as you suggest, convince herself that everything is much better than it is in reality, and that nothing has ever happened to Max or Hans and Rosa.
